ART 121: DIGITAL CORE STUDIO

Project 1: Culture Jam

The piece is based on a livestream from Apple featuring the newest iPhone 15. The company has a reputation for releasing almost annually and encouraging the purchase of new devices. Apple has a page dedicated to the benefits Lithium-Ion Batteries including: lightweight, longevity, efficient charge, and being recyclable. A main component of Lithium ion batteries is Cobalt. About 75% of Cobalt was produced in the Democratic Republic of Congo (Kara, 2024). This means that the materials in our Electric Vehicles, Phones, Computers, and Tablets come from Congo. The practice of mining in Congo is not ethical since it exploits workers so severely resulting in: child labor, day long shifts, illness, paying under minimum wage, and many deaths. As demand increases, business owners further down the supply chain increase wealth while poverty and displacement continue to grow in Congo.

This Culture Jam is meant to capture this exploitative nature of the cobalt supply chain. The original Ad contains the word Titanium in the center of the image. Apple is marketing the iPhone 15 as more durable claiming the inclusion of the Titanium Ceramic Shield to be, “tougher than any smartphone glass”, yet it continues to push consumers to buy new phones annually. Replacing this word with ‘Cobalt’ informs the viewer what the topic is about. The images throughout the Culture Jam also forces the viewer to consider the impacts of mining expansion. These include images of children working as well as overcrowded mines. It has become necessary for children to help parents out in the mines to meet the cost of living. This is reinforced by text stating that approximately 40,000 children work in these mines as reported by UN agencies. Women are also given the lower paying jobs such as washing minerals. The images might evoke a feeling of despair and disbelief when understanding the inhumane conditions of the Cobalt supply chain and the unethical practices employed in these mining sites.

Project 2: Video Remix

I wanted to focus on the transformative act of remixing. My goal was to invert the typical sweet imagery associated with squirrels and fairy tales. I wanted to focus on audio in order to create an unwelcoming and negative environment for the squirrels. I also wanted to parallel documentaries. These types of films will take close up shots and speak in a calm, informative tone; on the other hand, the tone of my collaged audio is insulting and informal (profanity, disgust, anger). In this way, it conflicts with the pre-established tone surrounding these animals.

I specifically included the word ‘rat’ throughout my video to insult and establish a new association. Rat can be used to describe something that is gluttonous, dirty, or involved with thievery. Most people are terrified of rats and combining that with squirrels gives the viewer an uneasy feeling. Squirrels are rodents after all, but I feel less people care because they have fuzzy tails instead of naked ones (I love squirrels).

Project 3: Artist Zine

My zine is based on the days of the week and my feelings about them. I often find myself fixated to a schedule because of work and school. I intended to create a light hearted/journal type zine. Handwriting was an aspect used to achieve the personal and intimate feeling. Handwriting was spread throughout most of the zine with little comments. Another detail that adds to the hand crafted and personal visuals was hand tearing images/text. This provides a rough and casual viewing. My doodles express my internal feelings about the day, even if my face in real life doesn’t always communicate these thoughts.

My text was primarily found in magazines. The orientation of words, making them angled or vertical, were changed to help add variety. Another method of finding text was through letter cut outs. Certain words could not be found so I had to collage my own.
